Department: Writing & Tutoring Center
Reports to: Dean - CAS
Scope and Purpose:
The Writing and Tutoring Center at the American University of Kuwait (AUK) invites applications for the position of Academic Support Specialist. The successful candidate will provide academic writing support through tutoring, workshops, and collaborative initiatives. The role involves regular interaction with students, faculty, and staff, and includes supervisory responsibilities for part-time and student employees. The position plays a key role in enhancing writing support services and advancing the University’s broader academic success mission.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one and group writing support to students across disciplines.
- Prepare and deliver academic success workshops tailored to student needs.
- Supervise supplemental instruction sessions, part-time staff, and student employees as needed.
- Coordinate scheduling and ensure smooth daily operations of the Writing Center.
- Contribute to the development, assessment, and revision of academic support services and materials.
- Collaborate with faculty, the Counseling Center, and other university units to support students with learning challenges.
- Contribute to data collection and report writing for departmental assessments.
- Participate in university-wide events and initiatives related to academic support.
- Stay informed about current best practices in writing pedagogy, learning strategies, and educational technologies.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the Writing and Tutoring Center.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in English, Linguistics, Communication, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.
Years of Experience:
- Minimum of two years of experience in an academic or educational support setting.
Skills/Abilities:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially with diverse student populations.
- Excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Effective leadership skills, including experience mentoring student workers.
- Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
- Sound judgment and problem-solving ability.
- High digital literacy, including Microsoft Office and educational software.
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Creativity and initiative in promoting student engagement with Writing Center services.
- Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required; fluency in Arabic is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with learning management systems, online learning environments, and generative AI tools.
